Andalusia - Costa de la Luz ...

The area now known as Costa de la Luz was colonised by the Phoenicians eleven centuries BC. They were drawn to its marvelous sunny climate, white sandy beaches and protected coves, where they assembled their various industries and founded Cadiz, the oldest city in Europe.

The area to the north is bounded by the Sierra Morena and to the south, the raised flatlands of the Sistema Betico, the two biggest and most southerly autonomous regions of Spain. Known as the 'father of the old civilizations', the powerful Guadalquivir River meanders through wild wastelands, mountain ranges and contoured farm lands.

The magic of Flamenco, the archaic rites of bullfighting and the velvet smooth taste of Sherry, from such bodegas as Sandeman in Jerez are world renowned as the essence of Spain, born of Andalusia. Hence the saying 'Spain is Andalusia'.

The Andalusian cities of Seville, Cordoba, Granada and Ronda are the ancient centres of power with an impressively long history, which have however made the transition into the 21st century with consummate ease. Across the centuries, their grandeur has stood the test of time. The cultural mix of Christians, Jews and Moors is still apparent from past epochs to the present day.

Here, nature itself has much to offer. Apart from the usual tourist routes, one is enticed by the wild rugged canyons, the remote mountain lakes and the white villages of the Sierra.

Conil de la Frontera ...

Conil in Numbers:

18000 Inhabitants

More than 3000 hours of sunshine a year

16 kilometres beach

1 arche

362 bars, restaurants and cafés

First Impression:Conil is indeed one of those picturesque Andalusian towns; the sort you always see in travel guides.Small white houses on the cliffs overlook the wide and seemingly endless Atlantic beach to provide postcard beauty. Andalusia "pueblo blanco" white villages as the brochures always tell us; the last paradise.

This of course is not quite true. Conil is not a boring paradise, nor is it a little village. In fact the town has almost 20,000 permanent residents, and this means a certain infrastructure exists. The daily life of the "conileños" can be seen in small and large businesses, garages, hardware shops, bars and restuarants, medical and vetinary centres etc. This is not a typical tourist town with rows of souvenir shops and overpriced bars.

Conil is more like the ocean: adorable and astucious, bright and hard.

Adorable: When both young and old dress up and get together to dance and celebrate at the fiestas and ferias.

Astucious: When in May and June the fishermen draw the swarms of Tuna into their nets and then slay the huge creatures with harpoons in a ritual act. Then the Japanese are happy because Conil Tuna is a Sushi highlight in the top restuarants in Tokyo.

Bright: With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year the name says it all; "Costa de la Luz" - The Coast of Light, shining in blue and white.

Hard: When the east wind with the harmless sounding name of levante blows, and "sensible tourism"comes to a halt. The levante blows powerfully through the streets, and the beaches are transformed into an Arabian sand storm.

Chiclana de la Frontera ...

Novo Sancti-Petri is a total resort complex built around a 36 hole, Ballesteros designed, golf course set alongside the stunning sandy beach of La Barrosa, near the small town of Chiclana, near Cadiz, on the unspoilt Costa de la Luz, on Spain’s Atlantic coast.
Chiclana is an agricultural and traditional town, with good wines and medicinal waters known as the "Springs of Fuente Amarga". It is easily accessible from Cadiz and the Costa del Sol. Its urban structure is typical of Andalusian style, with narrow streets and courtyards full of flowers. Chiclana preserves the most genuine customs and traditions of Low Andalucia: the processions, bullfighting, flamenco, wine production and the snacks at noon. All are part of the day-to-day life for residents of Chiclana.
Prehistoric rests have been found that tell us about the presence of man in this land since the Paleolithic era.
In the Old Times, Chiclana, as the other centres of population in the Bay of Cádiz, has as historical references Gadir and Gades. The history of Chiclana has always been associated to the Gaditanian one. In Chiclana there exist vestiges from the old Western civilizations: Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman.
In 1303, Fernando IV donated Chiclana to the duke of Medina Sidonia, paving the way for its resettlement and its prosperity, by exploiting the riches of its orchards as well as of the sea.
In the XVIII century Chiclana experienced another period of prosperity thanks to the American trade in the Bay of Cadiz and the settlement of traders on its grounds.
Its main riches have always been agriculture, vine growing and the wine business. In 1876, it received the title of city.

The resort offers a comprehensive range of on site sporting facilities, restaurants, shops and essential services and is ideally placed for touring the historic cities of Jerez, Seville, Cordoba, Granada and unspoilt Andalucia, with its famous “white villages”(pueblos blancos).
In its gastronomy, the Chiclana cabbage of Tagaminas stands out as well as the almond pies made by the Augustinian nuns. The interesting visit to the puppet factory shows puppets craftily dressed in typical Andalusian attire.

Off the coast of Chiclana, there is the island of Sancti-Petri, where the Phoenicians built the famous Hercules Temple. On top of its ruins, the Lighthouse and the Castle of Sancti-Petri were built, both in the XIII century. There, the musician from Cadiz, Manuel de Falla, conceived the music for his "Atlantis".

History of Novo Sancti-Petri

Between history and legend, the little island of Sancti-Petri seems unavoidably joined to the figure of Hercules. This islet has always had a mythical content, as the origin of civilization in the Bay of Cádiz. Three thousand years ago, the Temple of Hercules would stand here. As far as this myth is concerned, two of the twelve works performed by Hercules would take place in this land.
During the Modern times, from 16th century on, Chiclana joined his development to the one of the Gaditanian Bay, at that time the centre of the trade with the American colonies. The discovery of America was very important for the development of Cádiz and the other cities in the Bay, Chiclana included. The era of greater splendour was 18th century.
Nowadays, after an important economic transformation starting in the 60s and 70s, Chiclana is a city with nearly 60,000 inhabitants, which enjoys an improving and diversified economy and an impressive touristic development, leader in the province of Cádiz.
